An old map of the Thames from the Tower to Greenwich.

MILLWALL

Fire was an enemy that seemed to strike quite often at the shipyards on the banks of the Thames and it is interesting to see how large conflagrations were dealt with in the mid-nineteenth century. This was shown when the steam shipbuilders, Scott, Russell & Company’s yard caught fire in September 1853.

Hulks were a common site on the Thames during the Napoleonic Wars and were used to hold prisoners of war. They were also used to hold convicts.
